At Thomas1971Tavern, every detail has its own value and contributes to the guest’s overall experience. Beyond their practical purpose, our placemats are a part of our identity, reflecting the philosophy and aesthetics of our space.

Their creation is the work of the renowned set designer Antonis Chalkias, celebrated for his contributions to major television productions and his long-standing artistic career. Antonis, who undertook the overall aesthetic approach of Thomas1971Tavern, brought form and color to the unique atmosphere that defines our space.

Our placemats are adorned with an inspired painting that invites guests on a journey of imagination and memories. What place, you might wonder, is depicted? What memories does it evoke?

To spark your curiosity, we’ll reveal a secret: the place depicted on our placemat does not exist. It is a “Fantastical Landscape,” inspired by the iconic 1955 book “To Alphavitario” (The Alphabet Book) and its sequel “Alphavitario ta kala paidia” (The Alphabet Book for Good Children), illustrated by the legendary Kostas Grammatopoulos.

The story of this work is closely tied to Greek art and history. Kostas Grammatopoulos, along with his classmates, participated in creating propaganda posters for the Greco-Italian War in 1940. From this nostalgic heritage, Antonis Chalkias drew inspiration, infusing our placemats with a sense of emotion and timelessness.

The idea for the “ Painting” of our placemats was born just days before the opening of our tavern. With this artistic composition, Chalkias created a “Fantastical Landscape” that mirrors the philosophy of Thomas1971Tavern: a nostalgic gaze into the past, viewed through the modern aesthetics of today.

We invite you to savor not only our authentic flavors but also the unique aesthetic experience we’ve crafted for you.

At Thomas1971Tavern, hospitality is an art—and our placemats are its most emblematic expression!
